Our Story

With the guidance of Wellawaya Base Hospital (BH), a unique volunteer social service organization, comprising of hospital staff, patients and the community namely “Hada Mituru Sansadaya” (Heart Friendly Association) was set up in September 2016 with an initial view of empowering patients with heart diseases attending BH Wellawaya for their treatments. 

This was conceptualized by Dr Ganaka Senaratne, the consultant physician at Wellawaya Base Hospital at the time as he treated critically ill heart disease patients admitted to the hospital. One of the first of such patients was Rev Nandasara, the chief incumbent of one of the main temples of the area who has been widely respected as a community leader. (Who has been appointed later as the first president of the society and continuing as the president since its inception). 

His life was saved by the hospital staff because of a dedicated treatment plan entrusted to him. This incident earned the public confidence in seeking treatment at the BH Wellawaya rather than travelling far away to bigger hospitals. Dr Ganaka Senaratne realized the potential of such a community leader’s role in empowering patients and the community and decided to form a society with the leadership of the priest as the president of the organisation and the membership of hospital staff, patients and community. This idea was amply supported and permitted by Dr Manjula Epa, then Medical Superintendent of the hospital.
